When the dumb waiter starts sending down food orders they can't fulfil, things get increasingly strange. Harold Pinter’s ‘The Dumb Waiter’ is funny, tense and in its own way, terrifying. A play about hierarchy, obedience and what happens when people are caught inside systems they don’t fully understand. In these times, those questions feel particularly familiar. Who holds the power? Who follows the rules, and who writes them?
